Nordoff-Robbins Summer Course 2020 - Student Feedback

The Introduction to Nordoff-Robbins Summer Intensive was a wonderful experience. It was such a fascinating journey to be immersed in the world of this music-centered approach and to be able to witness the transformations that could occur through the power of music. I consider it a great privilege to have learned with such fantastic teachers, who kept us engaged and riveted to our screens and instruments throughout the week.  It was so heartening to see how you had managed to continue music therapy sessions and finding innovative and technological ways to connect with your clients in spite of this time of isolation and social distancing. Thank you to Alan, Jackie, Oksana, Mariana, Zachary, Jenny, Nick and Adreena for showing us examples of your work and for teaching and inspiring us.

I was able to have so many valuable experiences. Thank you for the 5 days… It was my first time improvising, but I really enjoyed playing with someone. I was also impressed by the fact that we could play and sing even if we were physically separated. By watching the actual clinical video, I was able to watch the client gradually trusting the therapist… I am grateful to the teachers who taught me from various perspectives, such as how to write songs, how to effectively use music equipment, remote music therapy, and music therapy in the medical field. I would like to use what I have learned in this program to find ways to spread music therapy in Japan.

Thank you very much for teaching us music therapy for these five days. I really enjoyed the lectures, and learned a lot from them. I was able to learn the basics of music therapy and improvisation through this course. It was especially very helpful for me to see various examples of music therapy…The lectures were beneficial to me, because I learned a lot of things from various viewpoints…I would like to apply what I have learned to the future and I will keep studying music…Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of such an amazing experience!

It was very interesting for me to actually sing the songs which you use clinically in music therapy and to learn the characteristics of each melody, such as Church Modes, and to actually improvise using that melody. I had done some improvisation on my own before, but I’ve never had someone else perform for me and help me develop… I also learned a lot from seeing a variety of clinical cases. I learned a lot about how music therapy is done clinically, what to look for in a client’s attitude and response, and how to reflect it in the improvisation. These five days have been a very valuable experience for me.
